Say hello to Justin Turner, owner and executive chef of Bernie's Burger Bus, and his son Cooper. Justin has been serving some of the best burgers in Houston for the last 5 years from his three school buses, and as of a year ago, from his brick and mortar restaurant which features a school bus made into the kitchen. Justin will also be expanding his restaurants in the near future to Katy and other restaurant locations and concepts in the plans. So if you're in Houston and looking for some badass burgers, you'll have plenty of locations to try Bernie's in the very near future. From the minute we started shooting Cooper wanted to be around the camera. He showed me his headstand trick on the couch, wanted to see all the pictures of himself, his dad, and even when we did the fridge shot he requested a few by himself, then invited me to take some with him (I'll put those up in a later post). Having two kids myself, I love kids who aren't camera shy.
One of the many conversations I usually have with my chefs is asking them how they got started doing what they're doing, what foods interest them, and general questions. Although Justin has been cooking most of his life like other chefs, his path has been a bit different. Starting at Wendy's, he has worked in various kitchens and was a private chef before starting his first food bus and eventually being where he is now with restaurants and looking to expand. His most notable job is being the private chef for former Houston Rockets player Shane Battier. Justin has loved Asian food since he started cooking and it shows through his dishes at home. Even the tattoo sleeve on his right arm. After all the food was put out, Cooper looked through everything and requested eggs on his "your father" Star Wars plate. So, what asian inspired dishes did Justin make? We had fried rice, maple soy glazed duck, and Korean style BBQ shrimp with shishito peppers. And incase you were wondering... everything was quite delicious!
